Deltamarin’s Managing Director Mr. Mika Laurilehto writes about Deltamarin in the past and today.
Twenty years ago a group of naval architects and engineers wanted to do something extraordinary. They had a vision of a bold way of doing ship design and they set off to fulfil that vision. As Mr. Alf Björkman, our first managing director, states: “We saw that an engineering company could function as a development centre for the shipbuilding industry.” An opportunity for an independent engineering group operating internationally was identified – Deltamarin was founded and the rest is history, as they say.

Deltamarin’s commitment to the BSAG was to create a tool that can be used as a basis for port and waterway fees in a way that the fees will encourage sustainable shipping and ship technologies. It is expected that in the long term this will help minimize the environmental impacts of sea transportation. If successful, a similar approach could also be adopted to other sea areas where regional features are of major importance.

Deltamarin has signed an agreement with Nantong Mingde Heavy Industry about the design of totally seven new Equinox Class Self Unloading and Gearless Bulk Carriers to be built for Algoma Central Corporation and the Canadian Wheat Board.
Deltamarin will take care of the Basic and Detail design of the vessels as well as Procurement support. The vessels are derivatives of Deltamarin’s B.delta standard bulker designs, which have piqued the interest of the market with their improved cubic capacity and lower fuel consumption compared to competing designs.
