Published: 5.12.2006
Deltamarin and the Vietnamese Nam Trieu Shipbuilding
Industry Corporation have on December, 1st signed an engineering contract for the detail and production engineering
of the Horizon class Pure Car Truck Carriers ordered by the Norwegian shipowner Höegh Autoliners. The contract includes also engineering assistance and production planning support provided by Deltamarin in Vietnam.
The value of the contract is more than 6.5 Mill. Euros. The use
of Deltamarin’s comprehensive network together with the company’s professionals in Finland has enabled this contract, which will give more than 80 man-years of work to Deltamarin and its partners.
The engineering contract now signed is a result of the long-term and good cooperation with the shipowner, which started with extensive concept development work and is currently continuing with basic design and procurement assistance.
Advanced 3D modelling techniques will be used in the design work. The completed engineering documentation will provide all necessary work execution information enabling work preparation, material handling, fabrication, outfitting and onboard installation work. The scope of engineering work includes all engineering disciplines: hull, deck outfitting, interior, HVAC, machinery, electrical and automation.
New ro-ro car carrier design
Some of the first purpose designed and built PCTCs in the world were delivered from Finland by the Turku Shipyard in the early seventies. Since those days this ship type has gone through major development steps. Deltamarin has been working continuously in the development and design of special ro-ro carriers, main emphasis being in efficiency, safety and environmental issues.
Höegh Autoliners together with Deltamarin have developed a new ro-ro car carrier design based on state of the art technology and with emphasis on environmental features.
The Höegh Horizon class PCTC will have higher cargo capacity than vessels with the same dimensions. The new design offers about 62,000 m2 of deck area and can carry about 7,000 car equivalent units. It has a reduced negative effect on the environment and includes new technologies developed by Höegh in cooperation with Deltamarin, such as ballast water treatment.
Vinashin
Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Industry Corporation is part of the state-owned Vinashin corporation, which controls a growing number of shipyards in Vietnam and has lately invested heavily in enlarging, upgrading and modernizing its shipbuilding facilities. The strategic co-operation will provide competence in construction of large car carriers. Vietnam has already started a promising development to become a major shipbuilding nation and expresses the ambition to become the world’s fourth largest shipbuilding nation.
Höegh Autoliners
Höegh Autoliners is one of the world’s leading operators of car carriers with a fleet of about 55 Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro/Ro) vessels in its commercial operation.
